Physical and Speech Therapy

Physical Therapy

Upon evaluation of a new patient, the physical therapist along with the patient will prioritize the major problems that interfere with the patient's quality of life. The therapist may then teach the patient movement strategies to facilitate smooth and efficient function for walking, transfers, and balance. A home program may be instructed with exercises for strengthening and stretch. The most important goal is to develop healthy habits of movement and alignment for every day tasks so that the patient can more easily 'DO LIFE'.

Gait and Balance Classes

As part of the Outreach effort, Gait and Balance classes are taught by the physical therapist. Besides active seated, standing, and walking activities, there will be an educational component to each class.

Speech Therapy

Virtually every person (89%) with Parkinson’s disease will have problems such as soft voice, mumbled speech, monotone speech, and hoarse voice that start early in the disease process and progressively diminish quality of life. Medicine and surgery may dramatically improve the other symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, but they don’t help speech disorders. The only way to improve speech is by speech therapy. The Parkinson’s Institute is pleased to offer Speech Therapy as a service provided by the Movement Disorders Treatment Center. To make an appointment, please call 800.758.4562.
